Light of Life Church

Practitioner - Debra Kerrigan

My Spiritual Journey

As a young child growing up, I was exposed to many religions beginning with Unity, Self Realization Fellowship, Teaching of the Inner Christ and Religious Science. At age 12 I asked to be baptized at the Unity church I attended and was given my first Bible. At age 13 I began attending a Religious Science International Church and attended my first Religious Science Youth Seminar and continued attending until I was 25. It was here that my foundation in Religious Science began. I attended my first Science of Mind class at age 17, and repeated it again in 1975.

I have enjoyed learning the principles of Science of mind, and watching others grow on their path. I found that during the several years I’ve taken classes and assisted in classes, I’ve had opportunity to "change my thinking" about ways I look at things and how I handle different situations. I’ve used the power of prayer to manifest my homes over the years, prosperity in my life, and wonderful jobs that have served me well. I’ve also seen how prayer can make a difference in people’s lives as they heal from an illness or make their transition.

In 1990 I returned to San Diego and was introduced to the Vista Church of Religious Science by my sister Sharon Hudson. I once again began taking the Science of Mind classes and completed my practitioner studies in 1993. Since that time, I’ve assisted in classes at Vista Church of Religious Science and have assisted in many of the classes at Light of Life. I have lead in-home study groups and visioning at Light of Life over the past 10 years. In 1995 my sister, Rev. Sharon Hudson began a vision group, of which I was a part, that would be the foundation for Light of Life. I have served countless hours in the vigil of prayer at Asilomar since 1993.

My ministry as a Practitioner has been one of service, and filling a need at Light of Life by creating and working with our Ministry of Prayer and Loving Care Outreach programs from the day we began our church in 1996. I have also worked with our youth in the Sunday school and with our teen group. I have served as Recording Secretary to the Board of Trustees for Light of Life for five years and am currently serving as President of the Board.

My passion is to serve and make a difference in the lives I’ve touched. I believe building community is one of many avenues to create a better world. When I returned from Los Angeles in 1990, I organized the "Adopt-a-Family" outreach program during the holiday season through my work at Bank of America, Vista Church and Light of Life. I have also been involved as a mentor for the past 14 years, mentoring two girls from age 6 to 15, and continue to be involved in the Big Sister Mentor Program.

My gift to each of you is one of prayer and service.
